The good guys were nauseatingly good, and the bad guys were complete bumbling idiots. It is a book that is definitely needed to read, and for cnomp reason, this book took me way longer to finish than I expected.

What is the theme of this book? Hiaaasen really love Carl Hiaasen, but this book fell short compared to his others.

Kids have to know all of these things if they want to live in a cooperative and peaceful environment. I had absolutely no problems with that, especially since I was reading this to my son, but Wahoo, decent as he is, needed a little more ummph, some more elvis, to really rule this story.

Weird names also seem to be a trend. It put a very interesting spin on the entire outlook of the book. I especially loved Mickey’s response to Derek, his resigned knowledge that things would inevitably go badly. There are always unusual characters, strange things happening on every page, and there is never a dull part! What’s real and not real in reality shows?

Wahoo’s dad, Mickey Cray, is an animal handler with a lot of respect for animals. This was a tongue-in-cheek look at reality television and made me laugh. They certainly appealed to this older one too. How can you can protect wildlife in your area? He is just so Thank you for your feedback.

Tuna gives Mickey some prescription “pink pills” to get rid of his headache. With a fast pace, ridiculous characters, and environmental know-how, Chomp definitely earned its passing grade, much like any other Carl Hiaasen book.

Jared then hijacks another airboat to track them down, taking Mickey along as a hostage. These books have some common themes. It’s all kinds of ludicrous situations that amount to a hilarious story.

Hiaasen creates brave but realistic kid characters who manage to solve problems and help set things right. I think it’s easy to make middle grade books rather shallow in the emotion department, but Hiaasen definitely touches on darker themes that are engaging and thought-provoking.

Carl Hiaasen has a large amount of his books available through the library as hiasen and I’ve been adding them all on to my wishlist each time I see them.
