Every element of the plot is revealed in exactly the right place. I was expecting more and something different from John Searles’, Help for the Haunted. Every plotline is woven smoothly into the story which is filled with Searles’ wit as well as wonderful creepiness. Share your thoughts with other customers. When she was nine years old, she left with her parents on a cold night in the snow to attempt to meet with her oldest sister Rose who had left home in hopes of reconciling the issues between her parents and Rose that cause her to leave.
Just the facts, man: Obviously, Sylvie Mason is very different from you. You won’t be able to guess this until you’re near the end and I admit I didn’t figure it out in advance of the revelation. See all reviews.
She was so young to be faced with tragedy, but like Sylvie, had a resilient spirit. Customers who bought this item also bought. The chills deliver, but the depth of the story is what really sets this book apart.
Other minor characters are deftly drawn. Fot and their father clash a lot—probably because they are a lot alike.

Sep 04, Valentina rated it really liked it. The ending for me started to get better and I wish the author had elaborated more on Rose and her distorted life. The old Tudor where the family lives was inspired by an old Tudor where I stayed at Yaddo.

There was a problem adding your email address. Why introduce a handful of characters if you’re going to completely change course at the very end? Well written, good character development but I definitely never felt the need to double check johb door locks or felt nervous venturing into the basement later that night as the author blurbs all suggested. Something feels creepy and just plain wrong for Sylvie but she stays in the car as she was told.
However, I have to say that the revelation of just who that person was didn’t come out of nowhere, per johm, but I don’t feel as though enough of a foundation was laid that made the ending feel earned – there were basically just hauntex couple of hints spaced through a couple of hundred of pages, and then They are fantastic in size.

Piatkus Cliff’s Edge Meg Tilly. I have never read one quite like this a ghost story! Slow, creepy, with a gothic mood, this psychological head game builds to an interesting climax. Rogan had been given a horrifying choice – set off the bomb, or see his loved ones suffer and die. The character of Sylvie is interesting and well developed, but nearly every other character seems forced or shallow, leaving questions hanging overhead, hoping for more depth. However, as Celia undertakes what ought to be a routine work assignment, she finds herself more closely involved than she could have ever imagined with a tragedy that has haunted her dreams for fifteen years; and it is Celia who is compelled to bear witness when the past returns to exact a brutal and terrifying revenge.

Sylvie is a fantastic narrator, a beautifully written fleshed out young girl. Jan 11, H. Age is Just a Number by Charles Eugster. Searles kept me guessing throughout most of the book yet he still gave ample hints about the resolution to chew on along the way. It felt like the author ran out of ideas and just allowed the story to glide to a finish, when it’s possible that some of the untied ends could have led to a little bit more. View all 3 comments.
